I started becoming interested in healthy living when I was in my 20s. Previously I had been a pretty typical young person, eating and drinking anything I liked without knowing or caring what effect it may have had on my health.
I was working as a singer and I used to get quite a lot of colds and sore throats, but it never occurred to me that I could influence this situation in any way; I simply put it down to overuse of my voice and ‘bad luck’.
Then, at the age of 25, I woke up one morning and couldn’t move – my back was in agony! It came as a total surprise, as I couldn’t think of anything I’d done to cause it. After a few days of being stuck in bed I finally managed to hobble down to see a doctor, who simply gave me painkillers and sent me on my way.
Over time the pain in my back gradually subsided to the point where I could move about and get on with my life again, but I was left with a constant nagging ache. During the next few years I tried lots of different natural therapies to try and heal my back – visiting chiropractors, learning Alexander Technique, and taking up Yoga.
I continued to practice Yoga (eventually qualifying as a teacher) and found it offered huge benefits in terms of my physical and emotional well-being. The backpain didn’t go away completely (yet!), but Yoga helped me to manage it.
My next major health challenge appeared during my early 30s, when I began to have serious problems with my throat. I developed throat nodules, and for a while I lost my voice completely. As a professional singer, this was my worst nightmare.
Around this time I began to practice Yoga with a new teacher who was also a Reiki healer and Hypnotherapist. This was my first introduction to Reiki and Hypnotherapy, and I found them both a great help. Thankfully I didn’t end up having to go down the surgery route, and was able to get my voice back with a combination of voice rest, speech therapy, self-hypnosis and Reiki.
Soon after this I discovered the ‘Rawfood‘ diet, while working on a cruise ship sailing to Hawaii. The raw diet is a way of eating in which foods are not heated above 115 degrees farenheit, so as to optimise the nutrients in the food. Enthusiasts report many great benefits while following this diet, including weight loss, increased energy levels, clear skin, reduction/disappearance of aches and pains, a stronger immune system, a more focused alert mind, better sleep, plus the healing of many major diseases.
As soon as I heard about this novel lifestyle something just clicked and I felt determined to give it a go, if only just to ‘detox’ for a while.
Straight away I noticed that I felt much healthier in general once I started the rawfoods diet. My body felt stronger and more flexible, and although this might sound strange, emotionally I felt a tremendous sense of calm and well-being.
However, after following it for a little while, I noticed a strange side-effect that I hadn’t expected at all – for the first time in years, my back was completely pain-free! As time went on, I also noticed that my voice got stronger. I could sing for hours without any strain whereas before I had to be very careful in case the dreaded throat nodules flared up again. The colds and sore throats that used to plague me practically vanished; my immune system seemed to be in tip-top condition, and I had a lot more energy than usual. This was all I needed to convince me of the ‘magic’ of rawfood, and since then I have continued to include delicious raw and living foods as the major part of my diet (check out my other website www.RawFoodScotland.co.uk for more details about the rawfood diet).
My growing interest in health inspired me to study a BSc combined honours degree in Health Science and Health Studies at university. This was a real eye-opener of a course, as I learned about physical health from all angles. However, I started to realise that physical health is not the whole picture; our emotions and thoughts also play a fundamental role in our overall health and well-being, and so I went on to gain post-graduate qualifications in Counselling and Hypnotherapy.
I believe that a holistic approach to health, incorporating healthy eating, exercise, and relaxation techniques, is the key to living a healthy, happy life.
Now in my 40s, I live in Glasgow, Scotland and practice as a Hypnotherapist, Counsellor, and Motivational Coach, both at home and via Skype. I love to help people lose weight, improve their self-esteem, become radiantly healthy, and ‘reclaim their true body’!
